Brad Keselowski and the No. 2 Miller Lite Ford Fusion team did all they could to battle for their second championship on Sunday afternoon, but without elite speed, they fell short of their title hopes at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Kes earned a spot as one of the Championship 4 alongside Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick, giving him a shot at his second title at the Monster Energy Cup Series level. Unfortunately, his White Lite didn’t have the speed to contend with the Toyotas of Truex and Busch as he finished seventh in the Ford EcoBoost 400 to finish fourth—the second-best finish of his Cup career.

“We ran as hard as we could and put it all out there and just basically didn’t have enough speed,” Brad said. “On the mile-and-a-halfs, we weren’t as good as the 78 and 18 and those guys. This last race coming down to a mile-and-a-half didn’t particularly bode well for us, but my team ran as hard as they could run. They made some great calls—Paul Wolfe and everybody and put ourselves in position every chance we could to make the most out of the opportunities that existed without just being lightning fast, but it wasn’t there.”

BK qualified fifth for the final race of the 2017 season, though Kes knew coming in that his Ford couldn’t match the Toyota muscle on mile-and-a-half tracks. Right from the start, BK and Wolfe went off sequence. A caution flag flew just six laps into the day, and Wolfe called his driver to pit road while the leaders stayed out.

Brad restarted 13th at lap 10 and used his fresh tires to carve through the field to second place. He finished the first stage in the second position, first among all remaining championship contenders.

As the sun set, the Miller Lite Ford swung loose, causing Brad to slip to fifth place—a microcosm of the race for the No. 2 team, as they never quite had the speed to make it stick up front.

“We’ve just got to be faster,” BK said. “We can’t show up and be that far behind on the mile-and-a-halves. We know that. That Toyota car is a good ways in front of us and we’ve got to figure that out.”

At lap 122, Brad pitted from fifth, and fourth among championship drivers. On this cycle, Wolfe elected to short-pit, an action that brought the rest of the field on to pit road. Kes was holding strong in the top-five when Danica Patrick hit the wall at lap 142, bringing the field to pit road. Wolfe’s fitted Brad with a short-run setup on with 10 laps to go in Stage 2, helping him charge his way to fourth with a strong restart. However, he couldn’t hold off Busch toward the end of the run and he finished the second stage in fifth.

Kes restarted seventh for the final 100 laps but was bottled up, causing him to fall to 11th on the restart. He worked his way back to ninth before pitting under green at lap 198. The 2 Crew helped vault him to sixth when the field cycled, where he remained when the season’s final caution flag flew at lap 229.

The 2012 Cup Champion restarted seventh for the final 34 laps, but he didn’t have the power to advance over the closing laps, settling for a seventh-place finish while Martin Truex Jr. won his first MENCS title.

“You’re always gonna be disappointed when you don’t win the championship here, but I’m not disappointed in the effort,” Brad said. “There was a lot of great effort from my whole team and that’s something I was proud of.”

Brad Keselowski had speed at Martinsville, execution at Texas and luck in Phoenix—now the No. 2 Miller Lite Ford Fusion driver hopes he can mix together all three elements of the winning formula as he fights for his second Monster Energy Cup Series title Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

BK’s great speed led to a second-place finish at Martinsville, and strong execution earned him another Top 5 the following week in Texas. In Phoenix, the speed wasn’t there, but the 2 Crew was fortunate as  Kes’ top rivals in the Cup standings bowed out due to wrecks, sending the team to the Ford EcoBoost 400 as one of four drivers competing for a championship.

“We probably had some really solid execution last week in Texas, great speed at Martinsville and luck [at Phoenix]. You know, if you put all three of them together on any given day, you can win,” Brad said. “We haven’t done that in the Round of 8, but we had one of each in all three races, and that put us in position to be here.”

A strong start to the 2017 season gave Brad a strong foundation of playoff points, essentially granting him that fourth-place spot all the way through the postseason. He breezed through the Round of 16, won at Talladega to advance through the Round of 12 and used a cocktail of speed, execution and luck to survive the Round of 8.

He’s joined by Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr. and Kevin Harvick. The two Toyotas of Busch and Truex have been the fastest machines in NASCAR all season long. BK is well aware that he isn’t the favorite, but the Team Penske driver is relishing the underdog role.

“Whenever there is a championship on the line, there’s pressure,” BK said. “On the other side, there’s not a lot of self-inflicted pressure when you know you’ve been running fourth or fifth all year and you’re probably going to need to win that race.”

Brad’s three Championship rivals all will bring momentum into Homestead. Harvick is fresh off an impressive win in Texas, Busch won the week prior at Martinsville, and Truex dominated the first three 1.5-mile events in the Playoffs, winning at Chicago, Charlotte and Kansas. However, BK isn’t worried about who’s hot and who’s not going into the winner-take-all season finale.

“I think momentum and Homestead is overrated. If you look at last year I would have said the guy with the least momentum (Jimmie Johnson) won it all. I’m not too caught up on that,” Kes said. “I’m excited about how we ran at Texas. I know that we’re bringing the same car build to Homestead, so probably a little more thrilled about that and I would look at Texas as being more of the momentum to Homestead than I would Phoenix.”

While BK’s No. 2 Miller Lite Ford might not have the mile-and-a-half prowess of its Toyota counterparts, it has a driver who knows how to perform when a title is on the line. This will be Brad’s first Championship 4 appearance since the alteration to the Cup postseason, but he’s gone to Homestead to race for a championship before in 2012, and when he did, he came home with the crown.

“This will be our first opportunity to go down there to race for one,” No. 2 crew chief Paul Wolfe said. “Brad has been able to do some amazing things when there’s something on the line like this.”

The White Lite will roll out for practice Friday at 1:55 p.m. ET before qualifying at 6:15 p.m., both to air on NBCSN. CNBC will carry Saturday’s first practice session at 10 a.m., while the 1 p.m. session will air on NBCSN. Finally, the 2017 MENCS champion will be crowned Sunday. The Ford EcoBoost 400 will go green at 2:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on NBC.

Brad Keselowski and his No. 2 Miller Lite Ford Fusion team looked to be set for a Top 10 finish in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but a late race incident prevented that from happening.

BK was caught up in some Chase championship drama on a restart with 10 laps to go in the Ford EcoBoost 400. Joey Logano made a dive to the bottom to make a pass of Carl Edwards, both championship contenders. Edwards blocked Logano, forcing the Team Penske driver to drive through him and send him spinning—Logano also skidded up the track, right in Brad’s path. With nowhere to go, BK wrecked, relegating him to a 35th-place finish.

“It was really unfortunate how the race played out at the end,” Brad said. “It’s a product of a format that’s based on putting everything and risking everything. I understand why it happened on both ends.”

2016 NASCAR Homestead

Qualifying second, Brad claimed his sixth front row start of 2016. He started the race alongside 2014 Sprint Cup Champion Kevin Harvick and maintained the second position until the first caution from Ryan Blaney on lap 27. Using the yellow as an opportunity to pit, crew chief Paul Wolfe called his driver in for a fresh set of tires and a fill on fuel, and he lost a spot to Edwards.

Restarting third on lap 35, Logano was able to pass on the outside line. The changing conditions on the 1.5-mile racetrack were not suiting well for the Deuce, as it dropped back to seventh by lap 55, falling behind Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, and Austin Dillon. Radioing in that the car is tight on center, and loose off the corners, Brad was slower down the straightaways as he couldn’t get back to the gas as quickly as his competitors.

Kes lost another spot to Kyle Larson on lap 59 back to eighth, and he pitted 10 laps later for a round of routine servicing while jumping back up to P7 in the exchange. Lap 77 saw Larson gain his spot back, three laps before the next caution for a spinning Jeffrey Earnhardt. Pitting again for a valuable fresh set of tires, he exited pit road in eighth and restarted there on lap 86.

Three laps after the restart, Matt Kenseth passed BK, sending him back to ninth, where he stayed for the duration of that run until the next round of green flag stops on lap 118. Gaining a spot in the full-service stop, he cycled out to eighth, before passing Dillon and Johnson for P6.

2016 NASCAR Homestead

Kes pitted more under green on lap 153. The Michigan native cycled out to sixth again after another four-tire and fuel stop. Brad held onto the position when a lap 171 debris caution flew, bringing everyone back into the pits. Another full pit stop was used to gain him a position, as he passed Kyle Busch for a P5 restart.

Going green on lap 179, he quickly slid back to seventh on the treacherous inside line before Johnson passed him for eighth on lap 196. On lap 203, Brad took the spot back from the No. 48, also passing Martin Truex Jr. and Harvick on the same lap. Three circuits later, Blaney made contact with the wall once again, bringing the caution back out. The caution allowed Wolfe to call his driver back in for another set of Goodyear Eagles and fuel with an air pressure adjustment — losing four spots in the process.

Restarting from P9 on lap 212, he passed Rookie of the Year Chase Elliott three laps later. Another 15 laps had gone by, and Kenseth was able to work his way around the Deuce before they were both able to pass Denny Hamlin to reclaim control of P8. On lap 252, the race took a championship changing caution as Dylan Lupton brought out the yellow for a flat tire. Coming in one last time for a set of fresh rubber, the 2 Crew prepared for a seventh place restart. When that restart came, melee ensued as the top two championship contenders, Logano and Edwards, tangled in front of Kes, collecting him in their damage.

The red flag flew after the large wreck. Another quick caution came after the restart, prompting an Overtime finish. Logano recovered from the wreck with minimal damage had one final shot at Johnson on the final restart, but Johnson was just too much in crunch time. Logano slipped trying to find a way around the 48, and Johnson drove on to his seventh Sprint Cup Championship, tying the likes of Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt.

“Congrats to Jimmie Johnson, certainly,” Brad said. “He accomplished what many people thought was no longer possible in this era of parity in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.”

The 2 Crew will now have a little over three months before returning to the racetrack for a points event in the season-opening Daytona 500 on Feb. 26, 2017.

Team BKR Ends Their Season with a Pair of Top 5’s

Brad Keselowski Racing ended their campaign in style as both drivers managed to come home in Top 5 finishing positions.

Tyler Reddick scored a runner-up result in his last race as a full-time driver for the organization, as his No. 29 pit crew continually gained him spots on pit road all race long. Finishing his season with a win and a pole, along with eight Top 5 finishes, Reddick was able to be the top driver outside of the Chase, finishing the year ninth in points.

“The Cooper Standard Careers For Veterans pit crew deserves a raise, because we wouldn’t have had a shot at winning if it wasn’t for their awesome pit stops. We had a lot of fun this year. We were still very fast at times, but just couldn’t capitalize on those moments to win as many races as we would have liked,” he said.

Teammate Daniel Hemric brought his No. 19 F-150 home in fifth place, also in his final race for BKR. With his two runner up results, and seven P3 finishes, it propelled the Kannapolis driver to sixth in the final standings.

“Tonight was a testament to not giving up. I’m glad that we could finish off the year with a top five; I’m frustrated that we couldn’t a win for these guys, but tonight was a solid effort for both BKR trucks. Thank you to Brad Keselowski, everyone at BKR, Draw-Tite, Blue Gate Bank, and everyone who has supported me throughout my career to get me to this point. I appreciate BKR and our sponsors supporting us all year in our efforts to chase wins and a championship. I hate that we came up short and weren’t able to notch a victory, but I’ve had a lot of fun and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished as a team. I’m so grateful to have had this opportunity,” he said after his 11th Top 5 result of the season.

BKR has already stated that prospect Austin Cindric will join the team next season, along with another driver yet to be announced. The drivers will look to take their trucks to the high banks of Daytona in February for BKR’s second win at the historic venue on Feb. 24, 2017.

Brad Keselowski and the No. 2 Miller Lite Ford Fusion team will look to bounce back from lackluster runs at Phoenix International Raceway and Texas Motor Speedway and end a stellar 2016 season on a high note at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Kes was left out of the final two rounds of the Chase for the Sprint Cup, but he still sits in a five-way tie for the series lead in wins—a title he’ll look to take home with a Ford EcoBoost 400 win this weekend.

“We can still leave Homestead this weekend with the most wins in the series and that is our focus,” BK said.

2016 NASCAR Phoenix

The Ford EcoBoost 400 marks the end of the 2016 Sprint Cup Series season, as well as the end of title sponsor Sprint’s 12-year tenure with NASCAR. Through Brad’s 268 races and 21 wins, all under the Sprint banner, his 15th-place finish at HMS in 2012 had to be the favorite of those races.

Kes entered the 2012 season finale at Homestead with a healthy lead over Jimmie Johnson, needing only a 15th-place finish to secure his first Cup title, no matter where the 48 finished. The stressful night in Florida led to two things: a 15th place result, and a Sprint Cup Championship. The event awarded both Kes and legendary team owner Roger Penske one of the hardest achievements in motorsports.

“I can’t be here withou them,” Brad said, pointing at his crew. “This isn’t a one-man effort, I might get the glory but it’s about these guys, it’s about my family.”

Since that P15 finish, Brad has grown even stronger at Homestead. Though he’s still winless at the top level on the south Florida racetrack, BK has posted third place results in his last two races on the 1.5-mile speedway. Although, in the preliminary XFINITY Series competition, he has claimed two Coors Light Pole awards, as well as a pair of victories. The most recent of those triumphs came in 2013 when he went on a tear from 11th to the lead in only seven laps.

In the Cup level, the Michigan native has completed all but three of his possible 2136 laps, spending 86 of them out in front of the field one year ago.

“We will treat this race as we treat the rest of them – we show up to win,” Kes said. “Since we are not in the Chase, we have nothing to lose, but we still have a lot to gain.”

Brad is in the thick of the race for the most wins in the Cup Series, and he’s also looking to make history by adding another Top 5. He has the opportunity to match the amount of Top 5 finishes he marked in the stellar 2014 season: 17 of them — nearly half of the season, a career-high.

2016 NASCAR Phoenix

While the championship hunt is over for the No. 2 team, looking at the bigger picture, and Team Penske’s 50th anniversary, Brad knows what is on the line at Homestead.

“The other part of this is that Team Penske is in the Chase so our team will support Joey and the No. 22 Ford team to the best of our ability,” BK said.

The Ford EcoBoost 400 is set to get underway on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 2:30p.m. ET live on NBC. Tune in to see if Brad can end his season on a high note with a win, and if Logano can bring his first title back to Penske.

Owners’ Title on the line for Penske

As the three-time and defending NASCAR XFINITY Series Owners’ Points Champions, Roger Penske’s flagship No. 22 car has the opportunity to continue their legacy this weekend. Handing the reigns of the Double Deuce off to young phenom Ryan Blaney, the Penske group is confident in itsability to bring in another title.

Competing against the 12-time NXS winning Joe Gibbs Racing No.18, as well as Daniel Suarez and Elliott Sadler, Blaney will be tested against some strong competition. Put in the final Round of 4 from a third-place result by Joey Logano at Kansas, and a pair of Top 10’s from BK at Texas and Phoenix, he’s hoping his protégé can pull it off.

“We did what we needed to do and Ryan Blaney will have a great chance to win another Owners Championship for the team next weekend,” Brad said after Phoenix.

2016 Xfinity Phoenix

Tune into their finale, the Ford EcoBoost 300 at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Nov. 19 live on NBC Sports Network.

Hemric and Reddick Suit Up for Final Team BKR Race

A testament to Brad Keselowski Racing’s status as one of the premier Cup Series teams, both Daniel Hemric and Tyler Reddick landed rides in the XFINITY Series next season, making this weekend’s Ford EcoBoost 200 their last ride for Team BKR.

Already with two Homestead-Miami Speedway races under his belt, Hemric enters the weekend with a load of experience. At the end of his one-year term with Brad Keselowski Racing, Hemric wants to end the season in style with a win before heading to Richard Childress Racing.

“Going to Homestead for the third time is definitely something I’ve been looking forward to all year, especially with the recent momentum we’ve had on mile-and-a-half racetracks,” he said. “We’re going to go down there, take advantage of one last opportunity together and put our Draw-Tite Ford F-150 into Victory Lane.”

Teammate Tyler Reddick is also prepared to end his stint with BKR on a high note as well by adding a second 1.5-mile win to his season. The California Kid will join Chip Ganassi Racing in 2017.

“The progressive banking at Homestead is a great help to a driver and one more thing I can do to make our Cooper Standard Careers For Veterans Ford F-150 handle better,” Reddick said. “It’s so much fun to go to tracks like Homestead where you can really move around and help yourself. Homestead is the last race of the year and I really want to go home with the trophy.”

See if they can add a second win to BKR’s season when the Ford EcoBoost 200 goes green tonight on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET.

Brad Keselowski was out in front once again at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but he just couldn’t close out the season ending win.

BK led a race-high 86 laps and was pacing the field when the final caution of the Ford EcoBoost 400 came with 11 laps to go. However, he couldn’t fend off championship contenders Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick on the final restart, and he settled for a third-place finish.

“We led a lot of laps. The last four races we have run pretty strong, maybe not quite as strong as Phoenix as we wanted but three of the four races we were really strong and we just didn’t have enough to close it at the end,” Brad said. “I was really proud of my team tonight, really happy with what they were able to give me and we were able to take a run at it, we just didn’t quite have enough at the end on that final restart to hold those guys off.”

2015 NASCAR Homestead

Kes showed solid speed all weekend and qualified eighth for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season finale. The green flag was postponed by roughly an hour and a half due to rain, and the 2 Crew had to clear a hurdle almost immediately.

The No. 11 car of Denny Hamlin was leaking gear oil on the track, and Brad was one of several drivers to hit fluid and skate up into the wall. The caution came out for the fluid at lap 13, and the 2 Crew sent an extra man out to the pit box to fix the damage, dropping Brad to the rear of the field.

However, the repairs were completed masterfully by Paul Wolfe’s group, and Brad powered his way up to 17th before the competition caution at lap 30. It was an excellent stop by the No. 2 Miller Lite Ford team, which earned Brad four spots during a fast four-tire stop. Two quick cautions followed, and Brad used them to jump to sixth after a lap 54 restart.

Nearly 100 green flag laps followed, and with Brad at the wheel and the 2 Crew putting together two spectacular green-flag pit stops, Brad cycled his way up to third in time for the fifth caution at lap 148. BK swapped between second and third place with Harvick on the next run, pitting from second place at lap 165.

2015 NASCAR Homestead

This time, Brad was second off pit road, behind only another member of the championship four, Martin Truex Jr. However, Truex was running on just two fresh tires, and BK easily best him on four new shoes to take the lead at lap 172. No other driver could touch Brad on the long run that followed. Kes pitted under green from first place at lap 216 and quickly cycled right back to a 2.7-second lead over Busch.

As the laps ticked off, Brad worked his way through traffic and lost some time to Kyle Larson, who had usurped Busch for the second position. Larson was closing in on Kes with a dozen laps to go, and an enticing battle was brewing between the No. 2 and the No. 42—until the race’s seventh and final caution flag flew with 11 laps left.

“I was just trying to understand what (the caution) was for,” Wolfe told FOXSports.com while standing on pit road moments after the race ended. “I didn’t ever really see what it was for, but I guess that’s just the way it goes. I figured we obviously had a nice lead there and should have been able to cruise into Victory Lane, but I guess it just wasn’t meant to be.”

2015 NASCAR Homestead

Brad asked Wolfe his opinion on what lane he should choose for the final restart, and the settled on the inside. BK in first with Kyle Busch to his right, and Harvick behind Busch’s No. 18. However, BK didn’t get a great run off the green flag and was passed by Busch and Harvick. However, Harvick didn’t have anything for Busch, who went on to win the race, and the championship.

“I don’t really know if there was a right one or a wrong one to be honest,” BK said of his lane choice. “We just weren’t fast enough, and I don’t think it would have mattered either way.”

Brad Keselowski isn’t competing for his second NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship like he hoped he would be at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but closing the season with a win and playing spoiler in the Chase’s Championship Round would certainly assuage his feelings of disappointment.

While the Championship 4 of Jeff Gordon, Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick battle for NASCAR’s biggest crown in the Ford EcoBoost 400, BK and the No. 2 Miller Lite Ford Fusion team will be racing with all they’ve got to post their second win of the season.

“We gave it a solid shot, and I am proud of the No. 2 Miller Lite Ford team’s efforts as well as grateful for the support we had from our partners and fans,” Brad said. ”To finish the season with a victory would go a long way towards offsetting our disappointment in not making it to the Championship round of The Chase.”

1120_BK2

Just like in 2014, Brad was undone by a rough finish at Martinsville Speedway. This year, a wreck on a late restart left him in too deep of a hole in the standings, and even second- and ninth-place finishes at Texas and Phoenix weren’t enough for him to advance to compete for his second NSCS championship. However, a win in South Florida would not just make those feeling subside—it would also put Brad on track for a rebound in 2016.

If his last performance at a 1.5-mile track, Texas Motor Speedway, is any indicator, he’ll be right there competing for the win. He led 312 laps at Texas but was passed with four laps to go, which kept him out of the championship.

He has been dynamite at Homestead in the XFINITY Series, where he has been 12th or better in his last six starts, including four Top 5s and two wins. His Cup Series resume there hasn’t been as glowing, but it has improved with time. Last year he finished third for his best result there for his career, and the season prior he was sixth.

Undoubtedly, his most memorable trip to Homestead came in 2012, where he ran a conservative race crossed in 15th, which was good enough to clinch his first NSCS championship.

1120_BK1

He’ll look to do a burnout again at the mile-and-a-half Miami oval—and he’s off to a good start. He posted the second fastest time on the board in the weekend’s first practice session, trailing only Carl Edwards and leading all four championship contenders.

Qualifying will run at 6:15 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network. He has started in the Top 5 in his last four NSCS starts, and he boasts two Homestead poles in NXS competition. Two more practice sessions follow at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Finally, the NSCS season finale, the Ford EcoBoost 400, will go green at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday and will air on NBC.

The final race of the year at Homestead-Miami Speedway was almost a microcosm of the 2014 season for Brad Keselowski.

The No. 2 Miller Lite team qualified well, overcame setbacks and tuned their Ford Fusion to run at the front of the field in crunch time. However, they came up just short of where they ultimately wanted to be and Brad finished third in the Ford EcoBoost 400.

“It was a decent night. Not exceptional but a pretty good night,” Brad said. “We ended up third with some ups and downs and got caught on pit road under a yellow. The team did a great job recovering from that. It was a solid to finish to what has been a great year for us.”

Brad ended a fantastic 2014 season, with six wins, five poles, 17 Top 5s and 20 Top 10s, fifth in the standings.

With that result, Brad finished fifth in the final Sprint Cup standings, first among drivers that failed to qualify for the Championship Round. But while BK fell just shy of the championship, as well as a victory at Homestead, he and his 2 Crew have plenty to hang their hat on this season, including a series-high six wins and 17 top fives.

That strong season would’ve had him finishing third in last year’s Chase format and in the previous format to that, based on total points throughout the season. After the season finale, Brad commented on how the new format played out, and tipped his cap to Kevin Harvick for earning the title.

“The fastest car all season won the championship. I think that is right. The most consistent car was probably Jeff (Gordon). He finished sixth in points. We had the most wins and finished fifth,” BK said. “You can argue every case for a championship scenario but the reality is that we all knew what it took to win going in, and Kevin and his team did it.”

Each of the four championship qualifiers—Harvick, Brad’s Penske teammate Joey Logano, Ryan Newman and Denny Hamlin—all had shots at the victory in Sunday’s finale. While Harvick headed to Victory Lane, Logano’s chances were dashed by a pit road mishap, Hamlin was undone by late cautions that didn’t mesh with his strategy call, and Newman just didn’t have the speed to match the No. 4.

Meanwhile, and not surprisingly, Kes and Gordon were the top two non-championship challengers for the victory at Homestead.

The Miller Lite Ford was fast all weekend, showing the speed that was a consistent part of the program all year.

That dynamic was evident throughout the weekend. Gordon won the pole at the 1.5-mile South Florida oval, while Brad qualified fourth. That marked his 28th Top-10 start in 36 Cup races this year and gave him a fantastic 77.8 percent Top 10 starting rate for the season.

Brad hoped he could use that starting position to run out in front early, but instead fell behind, as the White Lite ran tight through the center and lacked drive exiting turns early in the race. Earlier in the week, crew chief Paul Wolfe cautioned that the changing track conditions would pose an obstacle for the Deuce, and they did. Brad spent much of the race on the fringe of the Top 10, and only worked his way up toward the front as changes made by the 2 Crew began to take effect and match the changing surface as night fell on Homestead.

On top of that, adversity delivered a blow to the team at lap 59. When Brad headed down pit road for his second stop of the day, Brett Moffitt in the No. 66 car wrecked on the backstretch, bringing out a caution that pinned the Deuce a lap down. BK was able to take the wave around and get back on the lead lap, but restarted in 24th.

From there, it was an uphill battle, but it was nothing the No. 2 Crew hadn’t seen throughout the season. Overcoming that roadblock won Brad and Wolfe the Moog Steering and Suspension Problem Solver of the Race award.

BK rallied from some bad luck when the caution came out with him on pit road to break back into the Top 10.

On the following run, Brad moved up to 20th before Moffitt crashed once again to bring out another yellow. Another longer run followed, and the Blanco Deuce began to gain strength. Over that stretch, BK passed Carl Edwards, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kasey Kahne, Clint Bowyer and others to break back into the Top 10 at lap 100.

The slippery track conditions sent several competitors scraping against Homestead’s outer wall and brought out 13 caution flags for 52 yellow laps.

Brad, however, was able to keep the No. 2 clean and carve his way inside the Top 5 to fourth before the race’s eighth caution at lap 208. Through the next stretch of the race, BK dueled with Gordon, Hamlin and Harvick up front, moving as high as second. Through those battles, he held the Deuce steady in the top four through three more cautions and three more restarts.

When the 11th yellow flag flew at lap 249, teams began to strategize with many drivers looking to end the season on a high note with a win while four jockeyed for positions they hoped would. Some teams elected to stay out and others took just two tires. But Brad and Wolfe called for four fresh Goodyears, sending the Deuce back to P10.

The No. 2 crew took four tires on their final stop, which put the Deuce in the thick of things at the finish.

However, that was no issue. On fresh rubber, Brad jumped down to the bottom on the ensuing restart and darted his way back into the top five before caution No. 12 at lap 256. This time, Gordon pitted from the lead and BK moved to third.

On the restart, Kes was on the inside behind Newman with Hamlin on the outside. However, Newman was slow going to green and Brad fell back to fourth behind him, while Harvick made an incredible charge to the lead.

After one last caution flag flew, Harvick held off Newman on the final restart for the win, while Brad used his fresher tires to best Hamlin and take third—his best career finish at HMS.

Brad was happy that his team was able log a solid finish to what was an excellent season overall, and he praised Harvick for making a championship-caliber move when he needed to the most.

“It was a good night. To have another sound finish and bring home the white deuce with a third is not bad,” Brad said. “We certainly wanted to be able to win, and Kevin (Harvick) made a great move on that next-to-last restart and got through traffic and by us for the lead. That was pretty cool to see actually.”

Though he did not acheive the championship goal he and his team set out to, the season was far from a loss for the No. 2 crew. Not only did Brad lead the NSCS with six wins and 17 top fives, but both marked career-highs. He also led a career-high 1,540 laps, all beating out the figures from his 2012 championship season. In addition, won five poles, more than doubling his previous career total of three, and his average start of P7 was a career-best.

As he reflected on the season as a whole, Brad noted that he was very proud of what the No. 2 Crew accomplished in 2014.

“It was a solid season for everyone here at Team Penske,” he said. “We had six wins, and I think 17 top fives, the most top fives and wins in the series, and that is a lot to be proud of.”

All season long, Brad Keselowski and the five-driver squadron that is the No. 22 Discount Tire/Hertz team laid the groundwork for a dominant championship run, so when the final race came, it was a low-pressure affair for Brad.

The Double Deuce entered the race with a 29-point lead in its quest for a second consecutive owner’s crown, and Brad brought the No. 22 Hertz Ford Mustang across in eighth place to secure the title for Roger Penske.

The No. 22 team celebrates a second consecutive Nationwide Series Owner Points title.

“There are a lot of people at Team Penske that have been a big part of that,” No. 22 crew chief Jeremy Bullins said after BK clicnhed the crown on Saturday. “With everyone that drove the car, everybody played a role in it, whether it was one race or 10. I am really grateful for the opportunity and for everything Roger has given us to be successful. I am glad we were able to finish it off tonight.”

The five-man team of Brad, Joey Logano, Ryan Blaney, Alex Tagliani and Michael McDowell racked up six victories, 10 poles, 25 top-five and 31 top-10 finishes in 33 races. Brad captured five of those wins, four poles, 10 top fives and 11 top 10s in his 11 starts this season.

“It is an honor to be a part of this team and be able to drive this car,” Brad said. “This No. 22 Hertz Ford team has done a remarkable job of preparing this Mustang all year long. The pit crew has been solid all season long. We’ve had five different drivers in this car – that is impressive in itself.”

Ryan Blaney, Jeremy Bullins, Brad Keselowski, Michael McDowell and Joey Logano pose with the No. 22 team's owner's trophy.

Brad got the final day of the 2014 Nationwide Series season off to a solid start when he posted a qualifying time of 32.455 seconds and claimed pole No. 10 by edging out several other Sprint Cup Series regulars, including Kyle Larson, Matt Kenseth, and of course, No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing driver Kyle Busch, who piloted the only other car within reach of the owner’s title.

Kes led the first five laps of the Ford EcoBoost 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but the No. 22 Hertz Ford became extremely loose, causing him to slide back. At lap 33, the team’s championship hopes faced a grave threat, when Brad reported that the car’s voltage had dropped considerably.

BK was able to manage the issue by flipping the car off on non-vital loads. This, as well as the loose handling in the machine, caused him to fall nearly out of the top 20, but the work done by crew chief Jeremy Bullins and the No. 22 team helped him to carve his way back to the top 10 by lap 86.

The No. 22 team faced its share of challenges in Miami, but it overcame them and came through with a championship performance.

Bullins called for major chassis and tire pressure adjustments throughout the race, and as both the track and car conditions changed, the yellow and black No. 22 improved. However, the Double Deuce didn’t quite have the dominant speed that led it to the top of the standings.

But Brad was able to make the best of it by making some impressive moves over the closing stages of the race.

Several late cautions set up a green-white-checkered finish. In overtime of the race that was scheduled for 200 laps, Brad restarted P10 but picked up two more spots in the final two laps to finish eighth.

Brad led five laps and finished eighth. He led at least five laps in all 11 of his NNS starts this year.

Busch in the No. 54 JGR Toyota finished second, but it wasn’t nearly enough to overcome the 29-point deficit, and Brad and the No. 22 team won their second straight owner’s crown by a 23-point margin.

The No. 22 and No. 54 teams were far and away the most dominant programs in the Nationwide series, creating a class of their own.

Finishing third in the owner’s race was Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s No. 9 Chevrolet, piloted by driver’s points champion Chase Elliott. However, that machine finished 111 points behind the No. 54 and 134 points behind the No. 22. After the triumph, Bullins talked about that utter dominance, his respect for the No. 54 team, and how his No. 22 team came to be back-to-back champions.

“I think the things we have talked about this week that gets lost a little with the owners championship is it is a team championship,” Bullins explained. “No matter who drove, who worked on the car, if you look at the Nationwide Series the last two years the 22 and 54 have separated themselves from the rest of the teams and have two teams that are 100 points ahead of everyone else for two years in a row, those are two teams that have a lot to be proud of.

The No. 22 and No. 54 were in a class of their own all season, combining for 14 wins in the series' 33 events.

When Brad joined Team Penske, he pleaded to Roger that he wanted to see the team field a successful Nationwide program, and that it would be instrumental to the team’s Cup success.

That theory has proven to be true at many levels. Brad and Logano were two of the most consistent and overall dominant drivers in the Cup Series, finishing first and second with 17 and 16 top-five finishes respectively. They also led the series in wins with six and five respectively, putting them ahead of any other NSCS two drivers.

Additionally, the NNS has been a great source of development for the team’s young driver, Ryan Blaney. Blaney was the only other No. 22 driver to post a win, and was a consistent force all year long. He drove the team’s No. 12 Discount Tire machine to a fourth-place finish on Sunday at Homestead.

Blaney also drove the Brad Keselowski Racing No. 29 Ford F-150 to a second-place driver’s points finish in the Camping World Truck Series. His efforts with Team Penske and BKR also earned him a part-time NSCS ride with Wood Brothers Racing next season.

From top to bottom, Brad has been thrilled with the way the No. 22 team has performed, and the positive impact that has had within Roger Penske’s organization.

“The Team Penske Nationwide program has been an integral part of the success of this organization both in the Nationwide and Cup series,” he said. “I am happy to be a part of this team and proud that we were able to give Roger another Owners’ title.”
