The playoff intensity was palpable at Martinsville Speedway, but amid all the drama and carnage, Brad Keselowski made it through with an outstanding start to the Round of 8.

The No. 2 Alliance Truck Parts Ford Fusion driver won both stages of the First Data 500 and nearly won his second race at the 0.526-mile track this season, though a late bump delivered by Chase Elliott in a battle for the lead sent BK sliding out of line and settling for a fourth-place finish.

“We had a really great Alliance Truck Parts Ford,” Brad said. “We were able to lead laps, win two stages and bring home a solid finish—and that’s something to be proud of.”

Brad led 104 laps and earned 53 points, second only to race-winner Kyle Busch. He remains in third in the Monster Energy Cup Series standings, 29 points ahead of the Round of 4 cutline.

Brad started seventh and showed right from the start that the Black and Yellow Deuce was a force to be reckoned with. By the first caution of the day at lap 36, Kes had moved into third place. The 2 Crew continued its stellar postseason, sending BK off in second place for the lap 45 restart. Within four laps, he had taken the lead for the first time on the day.

It wouldn’t be a Team Penske race if it wasn’t for a unique strategy call by Paul Wolfe. The No. 2 Crew chief brought Brad down pit road while the majority of the field stayed out at lap 89. The decision dropped Kes in 11th, but he used his fresh tires to drive all the way to the front and win Stage 1.

During Stage 2, the No. 2’s long-run speed was on display. The entire 130-lap stage stayed green, and just two laps before the Stage 2 yellow, Brad out-dueled Busch for his eighth stage win of the season.

Brad waged an outstanding battle with fellow playoff driver Elliot late in Stage 3. Wolfe hooked Brad up with an air pressure adjustment for the 35-lap final run. BK held his position from the outside line before putting the pressure on Elliott. After a fantastic six-lap battle, Brad used a little push from his teammate Joey Logano to vault past the No. 24 Chevrolet and into the lead with 29 laps to go.

While Kes built a comfortable cushion and set sail for the lead, a battle behind him changed the scope of the race. Busch made hard contact with the left-rear tire of Logano, causing heavy smoke to pour out of his No. 22 Ford. With smoke billowing out of the Team Penske machine, he kept remained on the track for several laps before spinning out, bringing the field to a caution with just seven laps to go.

BK chose the outside line for a restart with four laps to go, and after a hard battle on the restart, he was bumped out of line by Elliott.

“I just knew I got in the corner and he was inside of me and we just made contact,” BK said. “The track’s really slick for everybody on the restarts. I think we saw that it takes about five laps or more for everyone to get going, especially the leader. There was a lot of hard fighting here. It’s a short track, that’s what they’re about—hard fighting. You try not to take anyone out. Who’s to say what’s too far and what’s not.”

Brad slid back to seventh place, but just moments later, Elliott was spun out by Denny Hamlin, sparking overtime at The Paperclip. Kes restarted seventh for the two-lap finale. Similar to Elliott’s move on Brad earlier, Busch bumped his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Hamlin, out of line on the final restart and held off Martin Truex Jr. to win. Meanwhile, Hamlin couldn’t recover from the bump by Busch, and he spun out collecting nearly the entire field. Brad was one of the lucky few to skirt by to grab fourth place.

Brad walked away proud of his team’s performance, grabbing two stage wins and a Top 5 finish to start the Round of 8, but he knows that after coming up just shy of the Martinsville win, he’ll have to be at his best at Texas Motor Speedway and Phoenix International Raceway.

“Everyone’s just desperate,” BK said of the race. ” You’ve got two or three cars that are so much better than everybody else on the mile-and-a-halfs that this is our race to get it done, and I think we all know that.”

Brad Keselowski called this weekend’s First Data 500 at Martinsville Speedway a must-win if he wants to advance past the Round of 8 to compete for his second Monster Energy Cup Series championship.

Of the three Round of 8 tracks, Brad sees The Paperclip as his best shot at victory. He’ll return to the Virginia short track as the defending winner, having captured his first Grandfather Clock at the Cup level this spring.

“Martinsville at this moment I would say is a must-win for us, and we know that going in,” Brad said after his Talladega win. “We tested there, and we feel like that’s the type of track that we have a lot of strength for.”

BK will ride a string of three straight Top 5 finishes at Martinsville into his 16th start at the 0.526-mile oval, and he knows that surface tips the odds in his favor. The Ford Performance stable simply hasn’t found the speed to contend with the Toyotas at 1.5-mile tracks, making Martinsville a crucial track on the road to a title.

“Well, the good thing about Martinsville is you spin the tires there, so the engine from a horsepower standpoint is not as critical when you can’t put the gas pedal down. I think that’s why we run so well there,” BK said. “If you look at the tracks where the Fords have won this year, it’s been the tracks where you have very little rear tire grip, a lot of wheel spin; Sonoma, Martinsville, and it’s been at the restrictor plate tracks, so I don’t think that’s a mistake by any means.”

Brad ran incredibly well at Martinsville earlier this season. The Rochester Hills, Michigan, native outdueled Kyle Busch late in the race to earn the coveted Martinsville win—one of the most special victories of his career.

“It felt like we were due with the Miller Lite Ford, and if you ever can be, this is probably one of those tracks, and today was one of those days where we persevered in a special way with the battle there with Kyle at the end I thought was a lot of fun to be a part of,” Brad said. “Hopefully it was a lot of fun to watch and kind of harkens back to the legacy of this sport on short tracks and why this track has been around for 70 some years because of battles like that.”

If Brad can replicate that performance, he’ll punch his ticket to Homestead-Miami Speedway where he’ll race for his second Cup title.

The No. 2 Alliance Truck Parts Ford will roll out for two practice sessions Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Qualifying will take place on race Sunday at 12:05 p.m. ET. The First Data 500 will go green shortly after 3 p.m. ET on NBCSN.

Brad Keselowski extended a personal record of five consecutive Top 5 finishes in the best way possible: with a win. Leading 116 of the STP 500’s laps, Kes claimed his first Grandfather clock.

“You know, the two wins this year have both come at tracks that I haven’t won at before and we haven’t won at as a team before, so certainly that feels really good to be able to check something off the list,” he said.

The triumph started from P4 as grid setting qualifying was rained out on Friday afternoon. From there, it didn’t take long for Brad to show the power of his the No. 2 Miller Lite Ford Fusion. Driving up to second on lap 3, he passed both Martin Truex Jr. and Chase Elliott. On lap 24, he passed Kyle Larson to take the race lead, and held it until the first caution on lap 69 from a Ricky Stenhouse Jr. spin. Pitting for four tires and fuel, he was able to maintain the lead but was busted for speeding on pit road. Relegated to a P28 restart on lap 76, the progress came through quickly. Three laps into the run, he cracked the Top 25; and another 20 laps in Kes broke the Top 20.

A lap 105 caution for a wrecked Jamie McMurray allowed crew chief Paul Wolfe to keep his driver out on track, set up for a third place restart. Using the inner line on lap 117, BK motored around Martinsville legend Jimmie Johnson, but was passed by Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch before the end of the 130 lap stage. The P4 finish awarded five Stage Points to the No. 2 Miller Lite team. Using the Stage 1 caution to pit, Wolfe put a new set of Goodyear Eagles on the car, along with an air pressure adjustment.

Restarting from P20 on lap 142, it took until lap 179 to break back into the Top 10. Brad then claimed his spot in the Top 5 on lap 211 after passing Trevor Bayne, Matt Kenseth, Erik Jones, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Johnson. Before the second stage ended without a caution, BK advanced to third, passing Penske teammates Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney.

Using the Stage as a chance to service the car, Wolfe & Co. completed another round of stops, while losing a spot to Johnson’s crew en route to a P4 restart. Miraculously, Brad was able to get that spot back from the outside line on the restart and passed Elliott for the runner-up spot on lap 287. Using the lap 333 Reed Sorenson caution as the next chance to visit pit road, a four-tire and fuel stop lined the White Lite up fourth, behind Stenhouse and Hamlin who stayed out. As Stenhouse spun his wheels on the start, it dropped Kes back to sixth, but he eventually clawed back to his second place position on lap 399.

Six laps after that, the 2012 Champion saw the lead again. It only lasted for a lap under green as Matt DiBenedetto hit the wall on lap 406. Taking the green again on lap 414, Busch claimed his spot at the lead back, before Kes took it back on lap 429. The duo traded the spot again on lap 444, and the final time on lap 458 – where Brad cruised to the checkers from there.

It was the first time since Kurt Busch’s 2002 Martinsville win that Ford Performance visited The Paperclip’s Victory Lane, and it was the first time for The Captain, Roger Penske since 2004 with Blue Deuce icon Rusty Wallace. Along with that, Martinsville was Brad’s 275th MENCS race, and race No. 1000 for Team Penske.

“There seemed to be a lot of numerology today with this being the Penske team’s 1,000th start here in this series, and it’s been a long time since Ford won here,” Kes said.

More than anything, the battle with Joe Gibbs Racing rival Busch allowed Brad to enjoy some hard-but-clean racing.

Following his second victory of the season, it solidifies his Playoff position and proves that the 2 Crew can continue to win on new tracks. Scoring a total of 53 points, as well as 5 Playoff points for winning the overall event. Kes now claims a series-leading 10 Playoff points, just ahead of Truex with nine. The triumph also took out a chunk from point standings leader Kyle Larson, shrinking his gap over BK from 64 to 34 points, eliminating nearly half of the deficit.

From here, the Monster Energy Cup tour heads to Texas Motor Speedway, another track the 2 Crew has continually performed well at, but have never claimed a win.

As a freshly repaved track, their TMS notebook goes out the window, but knowing what happened at the last mile-and-a-half repaved track in Kentucky last year surely gives the team a confidence boost. To see how Brad handles the fresh asphalt, tune into the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 on Sunday, April 9 at 1:30 p.m. ET on FOX.

Brad Keselowski isn’t in contention for the 2016 Chase for the Sprint Cup, but the No. 2 Alliance Truck Parts Ford Fusion team proved that they’re still a championship-caliber squad on Sunday afternoon at Martinsville Speedway.

Brad was strong all day at The Paperclip, even challenging race-winner Jimmie Johnson late but he ran out of laps trying to catch the No. 48 car, and ultimately settled for second in the Goody’s Fast Relief 500. The runner-up finish was BK’s second, tying his career best at the Virginia short-track, leaving him pleased with the day and his team’s effort despite falling just short of the win.

“The team executed really well, we just kind of missed out on the racing Gods today,” Kes said. “We have a lot to be proud of, a great effort, and showed that we’re still a strong team if not the strongest in the garage and I’m really proud of that.”

Beginning the race from the 19th starting position after a rough qualifying effort, Kes had his work cut out to make it up to the front of the field. An initial start on the bottom line boosted him up three spots to 16th on the opening lap, and by lap 7, the Deuce was by both Jamie McMurray and David Ragan into P14. The field bunched up on lap 22 when a caution flew for Ricky Stenhouse Jr. wheel-hopping and wrecking his Ford. After pitting for a set of tires and fuel, Brad was set up for a lap-29 restart from 15th.

At the green flag, he instantly drove by Aric Almirola, and passed another two cars shortly thereafter, putting the Alliance Truck Parts Ford in P12 at lap 34. From there, the long run speed of the Deuce came in, as BK passed Jeff Gordon, Chase Elliott, Tony Stewart, and Jimmie Johnson to move up to eighth by lap 55. The next yellow waved on lap 61 when Ragan’s car began leaking fluids, allowing crew chief Paul Wolfe to call his driver in for pit work.

The high line restart on lap 67 pushed the No. 2 back a spot to 11th, and on lap 75, the Deuce was nudged out of the preferred groove, dropping back to 15th. Undeterred, Brad began to climb back through his competition, passing Austin Dillon, Casey Mears, and Kurt Busch for 12th, where he sat when a debris caution flew on lap 133. While pitting for fresh Goodyear rubber and fuel, the 2 Crew made air pressure and wedge adjustments on the ATP Ford Fusion, and still gained their driver a spot on pit road, allowing Brad to restart on the bottom in 11th position.

With the inner line prevailing again, BK quickly passed Denny Hamlin, and both drivers got by McMurray, and Kyle Larson by lap 164. But Hamlin didn’t let Brad settle into eighth, and the No. 11 quickly took his spot back, dropping the No. 2 to ninth. But BK followed him through, passing Ryan Newman for eighth and later Johnson for seventh. The next debris caution flew on lap 200, and Wolfe elected to take four tires under yellow. That move cost the team just one position, and the Deuce lined up P8 for the restart on lap 207.

That move cost the team just one position, and the Deuce lined up P8 for the restart on lap 207.

2016 NASCAR Martinsville

After slipping down to the bottom line and settling into 10th on lap 212, Brad attempted to let Chase contender and Penske teammate Joey Logano in line, but he ended up costing himself in the process when Newman made an aggressive dive on the ATP machine. That move sent the Deuce all the way back to 15th. As he did earlier in the race, Brad rebounded by driving through the competition once more.

Over the next 25 laps, he passed Kasey Kahne, Kevin Harvick, Newman, Kyle Larson, and Carl Edwards, and by lap 240, he’d moved the 2 car back inside the Top 10. But BK didn’t stop there, also passing McMurray, Dillon, Logano, and A.J. Allmendinger to move up to sixth prior to a round of green-flag pit stops at lap 355. During the pit sequence, Carl Edwards blew a tire and knocked the wall down, causing a delay, and NASCAR took a total of 29 caution laps to sort the drivers out.

After restarting P8 from the back of the field on lap 387, it took close to 50 laps before Brad was able to pass McMurray for a position. However, he used that momentum and also scooted by Gordon and Martin Truex Jr. in the next few laps to crack the Top 5. That put him behind three Joe Gibbs Racing machines and Johnson with less than 100 laps to go in the race.

After biding his time for most of the afternoon, Brad did his best work in the closing laps. He finally got by the No. 18 of Kyle Busch on lap 466, then took down Matt Kenseth’s No. 20 car five laps later. Shortly thereafter, the No. 2 cleared Hamlin’s No. 11 for second on lap 477. BK closed a huge margin on Johnson, but as the race wound down, he found himself needing more time to get to the No. 48’s bumper.

“It was a good day for us, not the win,” Brad said. “I think we had the speed capable to pull it off, but still a really strong day. The car was good.”

The next stop for the Sprint Cup tour comes at Texas Motor Speedway for the AAA Texas 500. Dominating the race last year will surely give the 2 Crew an additional shot of confidence in the event. Tune in on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. ET, live on NBC.

Two Top 15’s for Team BKR

The Brad Keselowski Racing brigade rolled into Martinsville Speedway for the first of their four consecutive races to the finish of their season.

Daniel Hemric bested his previous top finish of 12th with a Top 10 in ninth this weekend at The Paperclip. Leading six laps on the afternoon, it was a solid day for the No. 19 Blue Gate Bank team.

“I’m really proud of our efforts,” he said. “I have been to this track more than anywhere else, and every time I come back, I try to convince myself that I like this place and should be good here. Martinsville is really challenging and it just doesn’t grow on me. It wasn’t the finish I hoped for, but I improved on my previous finishes here and brought home a top 10.”

Teammate Tyler Reddick battled with the brakes on his No. 29 machine all race long, preventing him from making a march to the front.

“The Cooper Standard Ford F-150 just felt a lot tighter today in the race than what we were in practice,” Reddick said. “We tried everything we could to make our truck it better throughout the race. It’s a tough deal, but sometimes that just a part of racing that you have. We tried our best, but there are a few things that we need to work on.  We have three more races and three more opportunities to get into victory lane.”

Following his 13th place result, Reddick finds himself slotted 10th in overall standings, and hopes to stay there for the remainder of the season.

The truckers will be back in action on Friday night as they tackle Texas Motor Speedway for the Striping Technology 350, live on FOX Sports 1 at 8:30p.m. ET.

An engine failure knocked Brad Keselowski from NASCAR Sprint Cup championship contention, but the No. 2 Alliance Truck Parts Ford Fusion driver isn’t throwing in the towel on the 2016 season.

Now, it’s all about wins for the Team Penske driver. He is currently locked in a four-way tie with Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr., all with four wins on the year. In the final four races, BK hopes to claim the series lead in victories and fight for fifth place in the final standings. That begins in this weekend’s Goody’s Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway, a track where BK is imbued with confidence.

“It does matter to me,” he said on overall season ending standings. “We’re starting to get this place where we’re really consistent and can run up front and that’s a good feeling.”

Preparing for his 500-lap weekend, he cruised to the racetrack in the passenger seat of his team hauler, alongside weekly driver Mike “Bama” Williams, and answering fan questions along the way. The most recent race run with ATP colors at Pocono Raceway was a near victory for the 2 Crew, finishing the day as the runner-up in the fog-shortened event. And without a title on the line, Kes wants to improve on that result.

“Win more races,” BK said of his outlook after Talladega.

2016 NASCAR Pocono

In Brad’s Cup career at Martinsville, he has managed to pace the field for 171 laps, with 143 of them coming in the fall 2015 event. His Deuce contained class-of-the-field speed, at one point claiming a lead in excess of 11 seconds, or over half of a lap, on the competition. Between himself and Team Penske teammate Joey Logano, they combined to lead 350 of 500 laps—70 percent of the race.

In his last two fall Paperclip appearances, the Michigan native has been plagued with mechanical issues. A faulty transmission in 2014 dropped him to a P31 finish, while a broken tie rod in 2015 paved the way to another finish outside of the Top 30.

While he’s seen a share of negatives at the Virginia half-mile track, the annual spring event has paved the way to some more memorable races. Last year’s running of the spring showdown resulted in a thriller between Brad and rival Denny Hamlin. A debris caution with 40 laps remaining set BK up for a run at the checkers, and he surely went for it. Already with previous bad blood with Hamlin, Kes knew he couldn’t push the envelope without consequence. Trying every possible late-race short track maneuver he could think of, Brad ran through the checklist – just without checking off the wrecking box.

“Hats off to Brad,” Hamlin said. “He had an option (to wreck me) and he took the latter — thank him for that.”

This season’s first race was a strong showing of Brad’s short-track abilities. Marred by a speeding penalty under a lap 91 caution sequence, he fought back through the field to finish fifth.

“It was a good Martinsville race,” BK said. “We had a lot of speed with the Miller Lite Ford on the long runs, but just not quite enough on the short runs to make anything of the Gibbs cars. They were really strong all day. All in all, I’m real proud of my team.”

Without worrying about the Chase, Martinsville has the potential to be an interesting race for the 2 Crew. Tune into the Goody’s Fast Relief 500, Sunday Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network.

Team BKR Looks Forward to More Martinsville Success

After facing elimination from his respective Chase, Daniel Hemric now tends his focus towards winning in one of the final four races of the season. His first opportunity comes in Saturday’s Alpha Energy Solutions 200 at Martinsville Speedway.

“Martinsville is a place I’m always looking forward to getting back to,” Hemric said. “As someone who grew up short-track racing, it’s a place where I feel like I can excel, and it’s also one of the places I have the most experience at. Track position at a place like Martinsville is key, especially in this shorter 200-lap race.”

Finishing a disappointing P22 in their first trip to Martinsville earlier this year, Hemric looks to improve. With a best finish of 12th place in two separate races, the potential is there to best the spring result.

“You don’t have a lot of time to make your way to the front, so you have to unload fast, qualify well and make the right decisions to stay up front,” Brad said. “We are 100-percent focused on winning races at this point, so we’re able to take some chances we may not have been able to make if we were still in contention for the championship.”

1028_bk3

Teammate Tyler Reddick also looks to add another victory to the tally. In his 2015 campaign, Reddick managed to finish inside the Top 5 on both occasions en route to second in points.

“Track position is even more important now at Martinsville and I think it has a lot to do with the Caution Clock,” he said. “That creates more stress for the crew chief because there’s going to be more restarts and more opportunities to get shuffled back in the pack. Racing at Martinsville is mentally challenging and drivers’ patience can wear thin very quickly, plus drivers’ tempers can come into play, so you have to race smart. I plan to race hard for all 200 laps and put our Cooper Standard Ford F-150 in a good position during the last run to the finish.”

Success for BKR at The Paperclip is no foreign concept. The Spring event last season saw Joey Logano take over the No.29, completing a virtual sweep of the day. Logano started off by claiming the Keystone Light Pole Award, and setting a new track record along the way at 19.504 seconds (97.08 mph). Logano then went on to win the event, in an electrifying Green-White-Checkered restart, darting out of line around leader Matt Crafton.

The Texas Roadhouse 200 presented by Alpha Energy Solutions kicks off on Saturday Oct. 29th at 1p.m. ET, live on FOX Sports 1.

Brad Keselowski overcame a pit road speeding penalty to get back into contention for the victory at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday, but the No. 2 Miller Lite Ford Fusion didn’t quite have enough for Kes to take home his first Ridgeway Grandfather Clock.

BK passed 52 cars, the third most of any driver in the STP 500, but a pit road speeding penalty roughly 100 laps into the day set him back early on. He climbed as high as second both before and after that penalty but never could get to the lead. After finishing fifth, he applauded the 2 Crew for a hard-fought day.

“It was a blue collar day for sure for Team Penske and the Miller Lite Ford,” Brad said. “Somewhat proud of to come home with a fifth. The team put together a great effort.”

2016 NASCAR Martinsville

The numbers were mediocre for the White Lite early in the weekend. Brad earned an 11th place start at the 0.526-mile Virginia oval in qualifying—right on par with the P12 and P11 starts he grabbed at The Paperclip last season. Meanwhile, Joey Logano claimed his third consecutive Martinsville pole in Team Penske’s No. 22 car. That left Kes searching for speed still, and the Deuce posted just the 20th-fastest lap during Saturday morning’s final practice session. But that didn’t have BK worried.

“I don’t think that practice speed today will indicate what the car is like, the track is going to change so much before the race tomorrow,” Brad predicted.

BK’s forecast was correct. Once the race started, Brad was on a mission, and the White Lite was one of the fastest machines on the Martinsville short track. An early caution reset the field just four laps in with Kes positioned in 12th, placing him in the precarious high line for the ensuing restart, but Brad showed his speed right from the beginning and picked up a few positions from that outside row, settling in line in ninth.

Just 20 laps after the restart, Brad had moved past Denny Hamlin, Kasey Kahne and Matt Kenseth into the Top 5. In another 10 laps, on lap 41, he had moved past Brian Vickers, Logano and Paul Menard into second place. Kes was just experiencing some tire falloff when a Michael Annett spin reverted the field back to a full course caution on lap 91. That brought the field to pit road for the first time, where a quick pit stop sent Brad off pit road in second place.

Unfortunately, the pit stop wasn’t the only quick part of the pit cycle. Kes was nabbed for speeding on the narrow pit road. Local driver and race favorite Hamlin was also caught for exceeding the mandated pace. Brad was incredulous after being flagged for speeding, explaining that his digital dash never lit up, warning him that he was going too fast.

“Paul, I didn’t even get to my lights,” Brad said over the radio. “Not sure how that’s possible.”

2016 NASCAR Martinsville

But not all was lost after the pit road miscue. The last time Brad earned a speeding penalty, his car ended up in Victory Lane at Las Vegas. Additionally, with more than 400 laps remaining, the 2 Crew had plenty of time to rebound. On lap 97, Brad began his charge back to the front from the 18th position, from the tail end of the longest line.

In the following green flag stretch, the poor track position hurt the 2 Crew. A chain reaction between Jamie McMurray, and Greg Biffle left Brad with nowhere to go. From behind, Austin Dillon piled into the No.2, sandwiching the Miller Lite Ford between the two cars. Cosmetically, the race car took on a new appearance, but a machine doesn’t have to look good to run well at Martinsville.

With his car looking something like a bulldog with a mean underbite, Brad continued to charge forward. At lap 191, he cracked the Top 10 and was up to eighth when Hamlin hit the wall at lap 221, bringing out the fourth caution of the day. After a slight wedge adjustment on a four-tire stop, the White Lite reentered the Top 5 at lap 257. At that point, the Deuce’s next challenge came in the presence of fellow Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, as the two longtime rivals traded the fourth position a total of three times in a 40-lap stretch.

Josh Wise brought out caution No. 5 shortly after lap 300, and Brad continued to show his speed over the ensuing long run. He moved past Kyle Larson, Kurt Busch, Johnson, Kenseth and Kevin Harvick all the way to second place. But just when he was closing in on leader Kyle Busch, a caution flag flew at lap 384. On this stop, the 2 Crew once again got the job done, entering and exiting pit road second.

But that put Brad on the dreaded outside line. With some help from spotter Joey Meier, Brad settled down into third after a hard battle with Kenseth. He remained in third when the seventh yellow flag flew at lap 457. This time, Brad was off in third and had the benefit of the inside line, making him poised to take second place. But Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Kenseth and Busch worked together: Busch took the outside, giving Kenseth the security of the low line, and Kenseth allowed Busch to keep his lead position, pinning Brad in third.

BK did all he could to take second, but after making contact with Kenseth, BK yielded and let the No. 20 stay in second.

“We had really strong long-run speed, but we couldn’t put together the short-run to really run with the 18 (Busch) and 20 (Kenseth),” Brad said. “We kept trying and kept trying but just never really found it.”

2016 NASCAR Martinsville

With even more damage accumulated on the No. 2, Brad had been passed by AJ Allmendinger back to fourth place when the eighth and final caution paused racing once again on lap 482. With less than 20 laps remaining, it was a tough decision, but the No. 2 team ultimately decided to pit for four fresh tires and an adjustment.

“We’ve already got a win Paul. Let’s try something,” BK radioed. “Who cares about Top 5s, Top 10s.”

Kes was the first in the field to pit, but unfortunately, not enough cars followed suit, leaving a big gap between Brad and the front. Kes restarted 11th with just 10 laps to go and quickly began working his way up. He reached seventh with seven laps left and sixth with four trips around The Paperclip to go. But he ultimately ran out of time. Brad bested Vickers on the final lap to claim his second Top 5 finish and his third Top 10 of the young season, while Busch took the checkered flag.

The search continues for his first coveted grandfather clock, but Brad now boasts seven Top 10 finishes at Martinsville, and he has been in contention for the win in each of his last three starts at the narrow short track. And he hopes that success will carry forward when the Cup circuit returns to the ‘Clip during the Chase.

“We’ve been really good here the last few times. If we can keep knocking on that Top 5 door like we have the last three times here, we’ll break through and get a win,” Brad said. “On to the next one.”

NEXT UP

The next one leads the series to Texas Motor Speedway, for the first Saturday night race of the season.

The last time Brad raced in Texas, he led 312 laps during the 2015 Chase for the Sprint Cup but was passed late by Johnson and finished second. Kes has finished ninth or better in six of his last seven starts at the 1.5-mile Fort Worth track.

The race airs at 7 p.m. ET, back on FOX.

TOUGH DAY ON TRUCK CIRCUIT

It was a rough weekend for both Brad Keselowski Racing entries in the Camping World Truck Series’ Alpha Energy Solutions 250.

Tyler Reddick had the No. 29 Cooper Standard F-150 in ninth for the opening green flag, while Daniel Hemric had his No. 19 California Clean Power Ford in 17th. The disappointment for Hemric began on the second stop of the day. He had moved his way into the Top 10, looking to defend his second position in the NCWTS standings, but he was parked slightly outside of his tight pit stall, resulting in a one-lap penalty.

From there, things only got worse for the No. 19 team. At lap 132, Hemric’s truck suffered a flat tire. When the checkered flag flew, Hemric was scored in 22nd, two laps down, leaving the young driver looking forward to his next opportunity.

“Today was a challenging day, to say the least. We started off the race tight off, but we were making adjustments in the right direction and had an extremely fast truck by the end of the day. Unfortunately, our pit road penalty set us back, and a freak incident with our tire closed the door on a realistic chance to win. Most importantly, every person on our California Clean Power team kept working hard until the checkered flag. Our team is better than our result today. I’m already looking forward to Kansas Speedway and the opportunity to score our first win together.”

For Reddick, a whole mess of wrecks spoiled his day. Reddick put scrapes and dents in his metallic blue No. 29 truck at lap 171, 199 and 235. Through all that, he hung on, but with six laps left, the carnage finally put the No. 29 out of contention. A wreck unfolded ahead of Reddick in the tight quarters of The Paperclip. Spotter TJ Majors tried to guide Reddick down through the wreckage, but he incidentally sent him down into the pit wall.

Reddick finished on the lead lap and in the 20th position, while Busch grabbed his first of two grandfather clocks on the weekend in overtime. The rough day had Reddick looking forward to the month off, and the chance to regroup and move on.

“This was definitely one of the more physical Martinsville races that I’ve ever seen,” Reddick said. “It gets really physical in the pack. Everyone is jockeying for position because there’s just nowhere to go and everyone gets bottled up really easy. Everyone on the Cooper Standard team will use this next month to bounce back strong at Kansas.”

The NCWTS will take the next four weeks off before returning on May 6 at Kansas Speedway for the Toyota Tundra 250.

The oldest track in NASCAR, Martinsville Speedway hosted its first race in 1949, and since then, it’s resided near the top of every Sprint Cup driver’s win wish list. Brad Keselowski is no different.

BK has come incredibly close on several occasions at Martinsville, including two times last season alone, but the driver of the No. 2 Ford is still looking to add his name to the list of winners at The Paperclip, something he hopes he can finally check off his bucket list on Sunday in the STP 500.

2016 NASCAR Las Vegas

To say that Brad was close to victory in both races last year at Martinsville last year almost qualifies as an understatement. His finishes of second and 32nd don’t do justice to how well the Deuce ran on the Virginia short track, where he led 161 Sprint Cup last season. But 2016 presents another opportunity, and pairing that recent success at the Paperclip with the confidence boost the No. 2 crew received from the last few weeks of racing before the Easter Break, has BK and expecting to be a serious contender for his first Ridgeway Grandfather Clock this weekend.

“We had probably our best year at Martinsville since I’ve been on the Cup side in 2015,” said No. 2 crew chief Paul Wolfe. “We really had a car capable of winning both races last year. Obviously we weren’t able to get it done. We feel like we can definitely build off of those notes from last year.”

Last year’s spring run at the tight 0.526-mile oval ended in a thrilling battle between Brad and rival Denny Hamlin. A debris caution with 40 laps remaining set BK up for a run at the checkers, and he surely went for it.  Trying every possible late-race short track maneuver he could think of, Brad ran through the checklist—marking off all but one possibility: wrecking Hamlin’s No. 11 Toyota. Already a party to previous bad blood with Hamlin, Kes knew he couldn’t push that envelope without consequence. The driver of the No. 11 respected the fact that he didn’t.

“Hats off to Brad,” Hamlin said after the race. “He had an option (to wreck me) and he took the latter — thank him for that.”

It’s unusual for two drivers the caliber of Hamlin and Brad to leave such a competitive race with an even greater respect for one another. But instead of brewing more animosity between the two, that’s exactly what last year’s STP 500 accomplished for the drivers of the No. 2 and No. 11. Kes took the high road and finished second, while Hamlin added the coveted clock to his trophy collection.

Brad returned in the fall looking to secure his own grandfather clock and book a spot in the Chase for The Sprint Cup finale at Homestead. The 500-lap battle for those two honors featured total Team Penske dominance, as Brad and teammate Joey Logano led a combined 350 of 500 laps, or 70 percent of the race.

The pair looked destined for a one-two finish, but as the old saying goes, “to finish first, you first must finish.” Late in the race, the Deuce was bumped from behind by the No. 41 of an impatient Kurt Busch on a restart, sending the No. 2 Ford spinning into the No. 20 of Matt Kenseth. That wreck ended Brad’s day, and Kenseth went on to intentionally put the then leader Logano into the wall several laps later.

Due in part to that gut-wrenching conclusion, this year’s running of the STP 500 will mark 12 years since a Team Penske entry saw Sprint Cup Victory Lane at Martinsville. Rusty Wallace last drove the Blue Deuce to earn a grandfather clock in 2004, his sixth triumph for Penske at The Paperclip. Brad will look to up that number to seven, and he’ll also attempt to continue his strong start to the season in the process.

BK will return to the familiar white and blue Miller Lite colors at Martinsville after taking two weeks away from the signature scheme. The last time the No. 2 Ford donned the White Lite colors, it ended the day in Victory Lane in Vegas. A pass on leader and hometown favorite Kyle Busch with less than ten laps to go set Brad up for his second win in three years at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

With a load of momentum on their side, the No. 2 Crew set off to tame Phoenix, the next location in the three-race West Coast Swing. Unfortunately, a repeat performance wasn’t in order for the Alliance Truck Parts Ford Fusion. Although the Deuce ran inside the Top 10 for a majority of the afternoon, it wasn’t enough to prevent a tire failure from causing a hindrance to their race. The next event in Fontana introduced yet another new paint scheme to the season, this time showcasing the No. 2 Wurth Ford Fusion. In the early going, it looked like Brad was a lock for another Top 10, until the 2 Crew was charged with an uncontrolled tire penalty. A determined, and fired up Brad was able to claw back through the field and get back in position to win—but that chance was spoiled by a late race caution.

Still, Brad crossed in ninth, which marked his second best finish ever at Auto Club Speedway, and adding yet another solid showing with this year’s new low-downforce package to the No. 2 crew’s résumé. This week brings a critical preview of the Chase for the Sprint Cup, but as Wolfe explained during a guest spot on the Motor Racing Network‘s Motorsports Monday, it won’t be much of a showcase of that new aerodynamics package. Instead, Wolfe expects the narrow Virginia oval to bring its own unique set of challenges nonetheless, as is always the case on the Paperclip.

“We’re not going to really see the effects of the downforce changes at Martinsville,” Wolfe said on MRN. “That’s the one thing, as we’ve changed aero packages over the last few years, it seems at Martinsville, you work on the same things every time you go there and that’s managing your breaks and keeping your breaks on the car for that 500 laps so you have something to race with at the and. And two, keeping the rear tires on the car. The drive off is huge. We haven’t really seen the aero side of that effect us much there.”

This season, the Sprint Cup Series has set a new record in terms of closest average margin of victory at 0.37 seconds. Of the five races so far, only Atlanta ended under caution, so the record is based on a four-race average. At a short track like Martinsville, it’s likely that average may drop even lower. Last year’s margin of victory between Hamlin and Keselowski was a mere 0.186 seconds.

That showdown between the No. 2 and No. 11 last year showed just what Martinsville is all about. With tight quarters, passing is always incredibly difficult on The Paperclip. That will make qualifying critical for the 2 Crew. And as Wolfe explained, a strong run in time trials will also give the teams something even more valuable than track position: a good stall on the short track’s crowded pit road.

“Our big challenge going into this weekend is trying to get better in qualifying,” Wolfe said. “That’s an area where we’ve been OK, but not where we want to be. It’s so important when it comes to pit selection. Obviously starting up front is important too.”

Brad’s best start at Martinsville is third, but that came all the way back in 2011. He started 11th and 12th in the two races there last season, and boasts and average start of just 15th. He’ll have a chance to improve upon that during Friday’s 4 p.m. ET qualifying session. He was 16th in the weekend’s first practice with a time of 19.637 seconds. His 16 laps were the fewest run by any driver in the top 35. The Cup series will also have two race-trim practice sessions at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Finally, the STP 500 will go green shortly after 1 p.m. ET on Sunday. The entire weekend slate for the Cup series will be broadcast on FOX Sports 1.

NCWTS RETURNS TO ACTION

Martinsville Speedway is a track of firsts for Brad. It was not only the scene of his first ever Camping World Truck Series race—but his first NASCAR start altogether.

In April 2004, the unsponsored, family run, No. 29 K-Automotive Ford F-150 was one of the 36 trucks to make the field at Martinsville out of 45 qualifiers. BK earned the 26th starting position and probably didn’t place any huge expectations on himself for the event, but he surely wanted to complete the full race, something that some typical short track racing is often quick to prevent. He missed 23 laps of action due to an accident, but BK managed to finish the race running and in 33rd position.

Brad hasn’t driven a truck at Martinsville since 2007, but his Brad Keselowski Racing team will hit the unique asphalt and concrete surface this weekend.

Coming off a nearly month long hiatus, Camping World Truck Series racing resumes, with both full-time BKR drivers hitting the track. Daniel Hemric, driver of the No. 19 Draw Tite / California Clean Power Ford F-150, sits second in championship point standings, one marker behind former BKR driver Parker Kligerman.

Championship contender and fellow BKR teammate Tyler Reddick is currently ranked 13th in points. The driver of the No.29 Cooper Standard F-150 hasn’t been able to put a full race together just yet, but the 2015 runner up completed both Martinsville races last season with fifth-place finishes.

“Martinsville is a very technical and very difficult track, and it’s not a place that’s in Tyler’s comfort zone yet,” said No. 29 crew chief Doug Randolph. “Every time we’ve been there, by the time the race ended, Tyler was as good as anybody.  I think he has a better understanding now about getting up to speed immediately and building from there instead of trying to get back to where we were last race.  We need to keep the Cooper Standard Ford F-150 fast all weekend.  That’s our big challenge this week.”

Both Reddick and Hemric are seeking those elusive victories to lock themselves into the new Camping World Truck Series Eliminator Championship format, but success for Team BKR at The Paperclip is no foreign concept. The Spring event last season saw Logano take over the No. 29, completing a virtual sweep of the day. Logano started off by claiming the Keystone Light Pole Award, and setting a new track record along the way at 19.504 seconds (97.08 mph). Logano then went on to win the event, in an electrifying Green-White-Checkered restart, darting out of line around leader Matt Crafton.

“I always look forward to racing at Martinsville,” Hemric said. “As someone who grew up short-track racing, Martinsville is a place I feel like I can excel, plus I have a lot of experience there. Chad Kendrick and my guys won there last year with Joey Logano and it gives me a lot of confidence going into the weekend. I know we’re excited to get back to the racetrack with our California Clean Power Ford F-150 and show everybody what we’ve got.”

With the NASCAR XFINITY Series enjoying the second of two straight off weeks, the Camping World Truck Series gets the Saturday afternoon spot. The Alpha Energy Solutions 250 is slated for a 2:46 pm ET green flag and can be seen on Fox Sports 1.
